Gone Girl

“My mother had always told her kids: if you’re about to do something, and you want to know if it’s a bad idea, imagine seeing it printed in the paper for all the world to see.”
― Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl

Book club read #1: Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn

New year; new book club, and our first read was Gone Girl, #12 on NY Times Best Seller list, and a book raved by all. I was almost halfway through when I recommended it to my friends and only had the best reviews. At this point, I was at the peak of the suspense and drama, and couldn’t put the book down. I was obsessed and understood what the commotion was all about…unfortunately, I soon was mistaken. I didn’t realize that middle of the book was the best it was going to get.

Our new club had our first Google hang out to discuss the book, and all of us agreed — we were disappointed at the outcome. Flynn had numerous opportunities to take the book in a different route to make the ending more…interesting. The end was bland and boring and overall just plain weird. It’s as  if Flynn just gave up on the book, especially one with so much potential. It’s definitely an easy read, and does have it’s peaks, but I do regret recommending it so much. and falling into the hype of Gone Girl. There is a movie coming out in October 2014, starring Ben Affleck, so I am interested to see how they will make it more interesting than the book.

Overall Rating: 3 stars, only because of the best part of the book, not because of the worst.
